We have developed a technique for direct measurement of graphene-graphene interactions across vapour or liquid media.  The instrument is called the Graphene Surface Force Balance (G-SFB), and consists of a symmetric setup with two opposing substrates (lenses) covered with large films of smooth graphene. The G-SFB allows the surface potential of both surfaces to be controlled whilst monitoring normal and lateral forces between the two graphene electrodes with fluid between.  The separation distance between the graphene sheets is measured with ~ 1nm resolution using white light interferometry.  We have been investigating the surface energy of graphene and interactions between graphene sheets in various media.
